Guest Lecture By Imran Yaqoob
Khan-A dunya TV senior journalist
Imran Yaqoob Khan,a pioneer of Pakistani
media currently working in a prestigious media franchise of Pakistan called
Dunya Tv,delivered a lecture in the University of South Asia,Lahore on 24th
october,2012.The speaker was the founding member and in the launching team of
Geo Tv and was one of the first employees of the leading news channel of
Pakistan back in 2001.The speaker is a gold medalist from SAARC and was an
addition incharge in JANG subsequently. The speaker is also working nowadays in
the launching team of a partner urdu channel of CNN in Pakistan.
The purpose of the speech was to paint
a fascinating picture of media infront of the students of mass communication of
University of South Asia which may result in an inspiration for them to pursue
in the field.
The essence of his speech was his words "Journalism
is a passion, not a profession".He said that triumph in this profession
alongwith its hardships can only be overwhelmed if you consider it as something
you are fond of.Not a mind bugging job,but a job you fancy doing and a job you
would treat like your passion. He added that digging the story and pursuing the
beat depends on your curiosity about the topic and the beat assigned to you by
your respective department. That would only be possible if the reporter has that
thirst for gaining knowledge about the topic.
In the answer question session with
the students,he said whilst answering a question that TV journalism is tough as
compared to the print journalism. He added that the reason being the fading time
in the tv journalism to cover a story. He said that timeliness factor in the TV
journalism makes it swift as compared to print.Print journalists have an ease
as far as time is concerned because they have to file the story before the
midnight regardless to the time of its happening because the news can only be
accessed by the readers after the dawn but television is a sudden form. There
are barely some minutes in which a reporter has to reach the source and cover
the story which makes it teeming up with obstacles for a layman with no
interest. He said that a moody person has no scope in the field as you can be
summoned any time at any place to cover a story.
Talking
about the technical pedagogy of the field,he said that there are 25 picture
frames in one second which are viewed as a part of a footage, and as far as
directors are concerned, their efficiency can be sorted out by those frames.A
single blurred image in a consequence to the slackish attitude of the technical
staff, can lead to the probable termination of yourself from the job. That gives
us the foggiest notion about the fact that how lightning fast reflexes are
required to reach a milestone in the field of journalism.
On answering
another question about the difference in the scope for both the sexes, speaker
added that women has astonishingly wider scope in the field but the reason they
are less in number in the national media is the conservative heritage.Women,he
said, mostly leave the field after getting into their marital lives and departs
themselves. But opportunities, still, are far more for them.
He ultimately ended the
speech on a positive note wishing luck to the students in their future and
received a round of applause from the students at the end.
